February 22, 2008 - The Mellon Arena, best known for its home center for the Pittsburgh Penguins, the former Pittsburgh Hornets, the Pittsburgh Rens, the Pittsburgh Pipers and many more, was formly known as the Pittsburgh Civic Arena. Locals knew it as "the Igloo." In 1999, the arena adopted a new name, the Mellon Arena.

Renovations of the arena in the past included an all-around expansion, upper level sitting, luxury suites, club seating and a new scoreboard. The seating number increased from 12,000 to 17,000. Currently, the arena holds approximately 17,000 for hockey games.

During its original construction, the center was built was in order to host the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. The unique building, a $22 million dollar investment, features designs unique from other arenas such as stainless steel arched panels and a rectractable dome (as of recently not in use). The Mellon Arena is currently the oldest arena in use in the NHL.

Hockey plays a huge role in the life of the Mellon Arena. Currently, the Pittsburgh Penguins host their home games there. The arena has also featured the NHL All-Star Game as well as the NHL Stanley Cup Finals games.

Aside from the NHL, it has also sold WWF's Summer Slam tickets, Led Zeppelin tickets, Genesis tickets and plenty of other exciting tickets!
